Cornelius Bos

U.S. Veteran

Cornelius “Niel” Bos passed into Glory on November 14, 2012 with his daughters at his side. Niel was born in Groningen, Holland on December 14, 1922. Niel immigrated to America in May 1930 along with sister Tressa and parents John and Catharena Wolthof Bos. From Ellis Island they came by bus to Muskegon, MI where Grandpa John’s brother Rev. Jacob Bos lived. The family ended up on Dogwood Drive in Spring Lake, MI, on a small farm. John and Catharena would stay on Dogwood Drive the rest of their lives. Niel attended grade school and then worked for Uncle Jake on his celery flats in Muskegon and at a foundry to help support the growing family. At age 20, not yet an American citizen, Niel volunteered to enter WWII. Flat feet kept him from the Marines, his first choice, so he became a paratrooper with the 503rd Airborne. Niel was the first wave over Corregidor and helped secure the island, meeting Gen. MacArthur on the island before they left. Home from the war in January 1946, Niel met the pen pal he had been writing to for years, June Myers with her mother Orla, had a farm in Shelby. June and Niel married March 16, 1946. Niel farmed in Shelby and then Hart in 1951, where they lived out their lives. June died in June 1976, after 30 years of marriage and three daughters. Niel married Lucille Anderson Mulholland in June 1977. Niel was a tenor in church choirs for over 50 years, he loved music and played the accordion, he was self-taught. Niel loved to build doghouses and sold scraps of lumber in retirement to support church missions. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Bos of Grand Ledge and her sons; Niel’s daughters Cheri (Gary) Michael of Hart, Lora Bos of Florida, Barb (Marv) Malburg of Comstock Park; grandchildren Branden (Pam), Corey (Tamie), Derek (Heidi) Michael, Katrina Thomas, Jolanda (Jim) Howe, James (Melissa) and Jeff (Annie) Malburg and Jilly Malburg; eleven great grandchildren Jenna, Elijah, Jessica, Hannah, Ellie, Nikolas, Max, MacKenzie, Jaxson, Sophie Jo and Blake.
