Mr. Lester Elwin Schaner, age 88, of Hart, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012. He was born March 20, 1924, in Detroit to Louis and Arlie (Weaver) Schaner. He married Julia Balavitch on June 6, 1948 at St. Joseph Church in Weare; they were married 60 years before she passed away on August 11, 2008. Les delivered oil for 45 years, first as "the Texaco Man" and owner of Schaner Oil, then with Farmer's Petroleum; his many loyal customers became his friends. Les was very active in the community, working diligently to make Hart a great place to live and do business. He served six years as a city councilman and five terms as mayor of the city. A founding member of the Chamber of Commerce, he was a member for over 50 years. He also served over 30 years on the Hart Fire Department and with TIFA. He was instrumental in bringing the expansion of State Street to four lanes and was on the Hart Beautification Committee. Les was a member of the Ludington Elks Lodge #736, and Knights of Columbus #2199 in Hart; he also was a charter member of the Oceana Golf Club, and enjoyed deer hunting and ice fishing.Lester is survived by four daughters, Jane (Dr. Michael) Burcon of Comstock Park, Louise Schaner of Kalamazoo, Johanna (Wayne) Jehnsen of Grand Ledge, and Kathleen (Mike) Tietz of Caledonia; two sons, Lester "Buster" E. Schaner, Jr. of Hart, and Charles "Chas" (Marcia) Schaner of Caledonia; two sisters, Marie Herrygers of Grand Rapids, and Vernetta Eilers of New Era. He also has eight grandchildren, Jeremy Jehnsen, Eric Jehnsen, Michael Schaner, Carolyn Schaner, Tara Bush, Nicole "Nikki" Bush, Jennifer "Jenny" Bush and, Julia Tietz. Two sisters-in-law, Carlene Balavitch of Muskegon, and Ruth Reimersma of Ada, also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Julia Schaner and his brother, Edwin Schaner.The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schaner will be offered Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Phillip Sliwinski presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the King Funeral Home. Interment will be in Hart Cemetery.
